Belfast, Maine, is a small city on Penobscot Bay, lying on the Atlantic coastline. Originally a seaport and ship-building town populated by the families of wealthy sea captains, it is now a picturesque vacation stop, full of one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants, and a lobster pound where lobster boats unload and sell their daily catch. The community at large is fairly isolated from the mainstream, and retains a lot of character from a generation ago. Waldo County in general is rural and wooded, with a few family farms still in use. Hidden in the small towns all around Belfast, are many impoverished individuals and families, under-employed and in fairly desperate need of home repairs including winterization. What you will meet with immediately are kind, common sense, down-to-earth people who are openly warm and welcoming, and genuinely appreciative of any help they are offered.
